In an interview with GQ UK, director Eric Williams revealed some behind-the-scenes information about God of War Ragnarok, Santa Monica Studio’s next game.
Williams explained that most of the studio’s developers were leaning towards having a trilogy on Norse mythology. However, he and Cory Barlog (director of 2018’s God of War) had only thought of two games – and had to convince the team.
“We knew what the plot points [of Ragnarok] would be. But at the time we were still debating whether it would be two games or three. Cory [Barlog] and I supported two games, but the team had already bought into the idea of a trilogy. So we thought, ‘How are we going to convince them?’
It was really a hard thing to do. Because [the team] started questioning, ‘Well, are we going to have to put two games together into one? Because that’s going to be impossible. People know trilogies, and when you decide to change things, many people are uncomfortable. But that’s where the magic happens.”
The director ends by saying that the studio made “readjustments and reconfigured the pace” for the saga in Norse mythology to be finalized in Ragnarok. But he also stated that nothing was cut from the story for this.
