Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West both received seven nominations at this year’s Game Awards, ten behind Ragnarok, God of War. That’s just one more nomination than PlayStation’s indie hit, Stray, which also competes for Game of the Year alongside those hits.
This comes a few months after learning that Elden Ring won the Game of the Year award, and many were sure it would be a big winner at this year’s Game Awards. However, it looks more uncertain now, as the late Ragnarok turns out to be a stronger contender than many expected.
Sony Santa Monica will have a very good night at The Game Awards on December 8 with ten nominations. These include Game of the Year, Best Game Director, Accessibility Innovation, Best Narrative, and two nominations for Best Performance by Christopher Judge and Sunny Sulgic as Kratos and Atreus, respectively.

This surprisingly puts Elden Ring in second place, and even more surprisingly tied with Horizon Forbidden West. Elden Ring is widely considered the better game, with a Metacritic score of 96, compared to Forbidden West’s 88.
In addition to all the expected major awards, Elden Ring is also a contender for Best RPG, Best Audio Design, and Best Art Direction.
FromSoftware’s latest hit isn’t the best of the best in gaming, and that wasn’t the only surprise at this year’s The Game Awards. In the GOTY category, A Plague Tale: Requiem managed to be nominated, although it wasn’t as well received as other games. It’s also the lowest-rated nomination in the GOTY category, with a Metacritic score of 82.
