During a recent live stream (via Winter is Coming), George R.R. Martin updated fans on the writing of The Winds of Winter, the next Game of Thrones book.
The author believes that he is 3/4 done with the story, but points out that nothing is finalized, so he continues to work:
“It’s the same update I always talk about: I keep working on it and it keeps getting longer and longer. I was working on it before I traveled here for three or four days. I was rereading some chapters that I wrote before, and I didn’t like them as much. So I discarded them and rewrote it.”
About a release date, the author stated that he no longer intends to talk about a date. According to Martin, fans have called him a liar with previous estimates, so he has learned a lesson:
“I make the best estimate possible at the time, and then things happen and people get mad, saying I lied. I never lied about any predictions. They were the best I could do at the time, but I think I overestimated my ability to finish things and how many interruptions happen because of other projects and demands that distract me.”
The release of the book is highly anticipated, as the most recent publication in the franchise is The Dance of Dragons, from 2011. Since the HBO series ended in a way that was not very satisfying for most fans, there is also an expectation that the ending of the story will be different in the books – however, nothing is confirmed.
Meanwhile, Martin continues to be credited as one of the creators of The House of Dragon, the first series derived from the franchise. Season 1 of the production was recently completed and there is no premiere date for a second year.
For those of you who want to feel nostalgic for Westeros, both series are in the HBO Max catalog.
