The Grand Theft Auto game franchise is extremely popular and every game in the series has been a success in its time. Like any other game that is successful, in the end it always gets some kind of movie adaptation.

According to new details, a movie based on Grand Theft Auto 3 almost happened and would feature the great Eminem as the protagonist, but in the end, this movie did not work out.

Kirk Ewing, cofounder of the virtual avatar application Veemee, talked about this in one of the podcasts. Once, between him and Sam Houser, they talked late into the night, in which they discussed the possibility of a movie adaptation of GTA. This was right after the release of Grand Theft Auto 3.

“I remember I got a call at 4 in the morning from one of the producers in Los Angeles with an offer to do a movie, and he said, “Kirk, we have Eminem for the lead role, this will be a Tony Scott movie, are you interested?”
So I called Sam and said, “Look, you need to know this. They want Eminem to star in a Grand Theft Auto movie directed by Tony Scott.” And he said, “I’m not interested.”

At the time, they [Rockstar] withdrew from any talk of making a movie when they realized they had such a big franchise on their hands that no movie at the time could compete.”

Unfortunately the years have passed and several Grand Theft Auto games have been released, yet no movie has been made and it looks like that will never happen.

Rockstar is currently focused on the development of Grand Theft Auto VI, which recently experienced major leaks.
